Ducati Considers Nicolo Bulega for MotoGP Debut at Portimao | Marc Marquez Replacement? (2025)

Ducati's Big Decision: A New MotoGP Star in the Making?

In a surprising turn of events, Ducati is reportedly considering a bold move to replace the injured Marc Marquez with their own Nicolo Bulega for the upcoming MotoGP race in Portimao. But here's where it gets controversial...

With Marquez's return looking increasingly unlikely for the Portuguese Grand Prix, Ducati is eyeing Bulega, their World Superbike Championship rider and MotoGP tester, as a potential replacement. Bulega, who signed a two-season contract with Ducati earlier this year, brings valuable experience with Pirelli tyres, which will be introduced to MotoGP in 2027.

As the superbike season concludes this weekend in Jerez, with all signs pointing to Bulega's rival, Toprak Razgatlioglu, claiming the title, Bulega will have a window of opportunity in November. This has sparked speculation about his potential MotoGP debut.

Ducati team manager Davide Tardozzi confirmed to DAZN that Marquez's presence at Portimao is highly improbable, stating, "We'd love to have him in Valencia for the season finale, but a medical check-up is necessary first. If he can't make it, that's okay too." This suggests Ducati is prepared to wait until the Sepang test in February 2026 for Marquez's return.

When asked about the rumours, Tardozzi acknowledged, "It's a possibility. Nicolo is focused on the SBK championship in Jerez this weekend. We'll consider his MotoGP debut at Portimao after that."

Tardozzi remained tight-lipped about a potential test day for Bulega before his debut, leaving the decision up in the air. "It would be beneficial, we'll assess it after the Jerez weekend," he added.

Marquez suffered a right shoulder fracture after a collision with Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi during the Indonesian Grand Prix. He underwent surgery on the injured shoulder and has been ruled out for the Australia-Malaysia double-header. Ducati's test rider, Michele Pirro, is confirmed for the Australian Grand Prix this weekend, with expectations that he'll also be on duty in Malaysia.

And this is the part most people miss: Ducati's decision to consider Bulega as a replacement highlights the team's confidence in his abilities. With Marquez's injury, the team could have opted for a more conservative approach, but instead, they're taking a chance on a new talent.

So, what do you think? Is Bulega ready for the MotoGP spotlight? Should Ducati take a chance on him, or is it too risky? We want to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
